Ahead of National Apprenticeship Week next month, The Talent Foundry has showcased its commitment to developing young people by joining The 5% Club, an industry-led initiative focussed on driving momentum into the recruitment of apprentices, graduates and sponsored students.

The 5% Club is a movement of more than 950 employers providing ‘earn and learn’ opportunities to develop the skills and talents people need to become more employable and create meaningful careers. Companies joining The 5% Club commit to raising the number of apprentices, sponsored students and graduates on formal programmes to 5% of their total workforce within five years.

in 2021, The Talent Foundry extended its employability initiatives to support young people from low socio-economic backgrounds prepare for and secure an apprenticeship with national brands and employers. The programme helps students get 'match-fit' for the competitive application and assessment process and provides tailored coaching to build confidence and skills.

Students are also supported in their first year with a development grant to contribute to the costs of travel, office attire or equipment so they can make the most of their 'earn and learn' experience.

Jenni Anderson, Chief Executive at The Talent Foundry said:

"We know there are disparities in apprenticeship opportunities for those from underserved backgrounds. The Social Mobility Commission found that workplace learners from more disadvantaged backgrounds are less likely to get selected for an apprenticeship than their more privileged peers. If you already start behind, how can you get ahead?"

"We wanted to demonstrate our commitment to young people who are navigating their next steps for a successful career after school - often, with limited support and networks. We're pleased to join The 5% Club and be part of dynamic eco-system which is committed to working with employers and young talent to improve access to apprenticeships."

The 5% Club was founded in 2013, and during the 10th Anniversary year will continue to use its platform, and record of success to engage with policymakers and influencers on issues of concern and relevance, specifically increasing awareness and activity that links skills investment with discernible social impact.

Gill Cronin, Director of Operations of The 5% Club said:

“We’re delighted to welcome The Talent Foundry into membership. The 5% Club provides a fantastic network of HR and L&D professionals, sharing and learning from each other. All our members share an ethos of creating a skilled workforce through ‘earn and learn’ development programmes, helping people develop meaningful career paths.”
