Learning happens outside of your comfort zone

From bonding over breakfasts to being inspired by volunteers, Mariyam’s journey on The Talent Foundry’s Powering Potential programme in partnership with Dell Technologies broadened her horizons in unexpected ways. Across four sessions, Mariyam and her peers visited inspirational venues, met industry volunteers and participated in interviews and skills-based activities.

Her biggest takeaway? There’s more to the tech world than meets the eye – and more than one way to get there.

Exploring new paths in tech

One highlight was engaging with volunteers who conducted mock interviews and gave direct feedback, including structuring answers using the STAR method. These sessions sharpened her interview and networking skills whilst offering valuable insight from professionals in her chosen fields. Initially focused on software engineering, Mariyam became intrigued by the AI challenges presented to her, deciding to switch tracks and focus on cyber security.

Students also developed their online presence, with the time and support provided to build LinkedIn profiles. Mariyam realised the power of networks in securing experience and future jobs. She also learned that apprenticeships could be a strong alternative to university, offering flexibility and real-world experience, a pathway she had not considered before.

I’m thinking big, because I know a lot more than before… I’ve got more knowledge, and I’ve got that confidence as well.

The programme introduced her to UK workplace culture, which differs from her birth country. She was struck by how employee perks such as snacks and gyms contribute to wellbeing, productivity and business success. Alongside industry knowledge, Mariyam strengthened personal skills that will serve her in the workplace – including confidence, critical thinking, problem solving and respect.

Learning from industry and each other

In a full-circle moment, she also met Shaima, a Powering Potential graduate now on a Level 4 Apprenticeship at ANS Group. Having been inspired by ANS during her own programme, Shaima returned to encourage the next cohort:

I was in your shoes last year, and here I am.

Shaima's words showed Mariyam and her peers that anything is possible.

By the end of the programme, Mariyam felt more confident in her ability to thrive, whether writing a CV, in interviews or stepping into future roles. The programme taught her that you only improve by doing, and it gave her the tools to take the first steps towards realising her boundless potential.
